I'm currently reading a book entitled "How to do the work" by Dr. Nicole Lepera aka the holistic psychologist, today I finished reading chapter 7 which was about "Meeting your inner child" and at the end of this chapter, Lepera suggested writing a letter to our inner child.
She stated seven inner child archetypes: Caretaker, overachiever, underachiever, protector/rescuer, life of the party, always says yes person and the hero worshiper.
As I reflected and dug deep into my wounded inner child I immediately resonated with the underachiever, and no matter how much work I've done on my personality for the past three years, I always catch myself playing small, keeping myself unseen and beneath my potential due to fear of criticism or shame of failure, I find myself withdrawing from any emotional game before it's even played, it's almost like I have this core belief, that in order for me to be loved, I must stay invisible.
So here I am, writing a letter to my inner child as a way to rebuild this long lost connection with my authentic self, as a reminder that my inner child is safe to express itself and is always accepted:
Dear little underachiever Rebecca,
I know you have felt that you needed to hide some of the things that you are bright at, your strength points, your achievements and other good parts of yourself so you wouldn't hurt people's feelings or make them feel inferior to you, I also know that you kept yourself from succeeding and unleashing your true potentials because you felt unworthy of enjoying pride and satisfaction, I now know that these beliefs never gave you permission to celebrate your awesomeness and never permitted people around you to actually experience the true and authentic you, this has left you feeling heavy hearted and tired, but that's all okay now. You are allowed to show everybody the good in you, the light that shines through you, the raw and real you. I promise you are allowed to show the beauty in you and still be loved. You don't have to do this anymore, you don't have to play small, be small or think small. I allow you from now on to shine and spill your magic into the world.
I see you, I hear you and I love you always.
Wise Adult Rebecca.
